The Kedarkantha Trek is an iconic winter trek nestled in Uttarakhand’s Garhwal Himalayas. Rising to an altitude of 12,500 ft, this snow-laden adventure is famed for its dazzling summit views, beautiful forest campsites like Juda Ka Talab, and the cultural warmth of Himalayan villages such as Sankri. As one of the country’s most popular beginner-friendly treks, it offers a blend of thrilling summit climbs, spectacular mountain vistas, and unforgettable Himalayan hospitality—making it a must-do for trekkers and nature enthusiasts.
Located in the heart of Uttarkashi district, the Kedarkantha Trek takes trekkers on a magical journey through dense pine, oak, and rhododendron forests, across sparkling snowfields and up to a legendary summit that commands 360° Himalayan views. The trek begins at the idyllic village of Sankri, gateway to numerous Garhwal treks and known for its wooden houses and vibrant culture.
The real magic of Kedarkantha comes alive in winter when the white snow transforms the landscape. Journeying through snow-draped forests, trekkers camp by the frozen lake of Juda Ka Talab and watch the night sky ablaze with stars and moonlight. The high point is the summit climb, a thrilling yet achievable ascent for those with moderate fitness—rewarding everyone with panoramic vistas of peaks like Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Black Peak (Kalanag), the Yamunotri & Gangotri ranges, and the verdant Har Ki Dun Valley.
Cultural immersion is seamless in Kedarkantha. Village interactions, local wooden architecture, and visits to the Shiva temple at the summit add a spiritual dimension to the trek. With Himalayan Hikers and other experienced local teams, trekkers enjoy safe logistics, delicious hot meals, premium camping gear, and eco-friendly practices throughout.
Kedarkantha’s well-marked, snow-clad paths and gently escalating altitude profile make it ideal for first-timers, families, women trekkers, and kids (typically 6–60 years, with fitness checks). Supportive guides, portable medical kits, and acclimatization-oriented camps further ensure safety and enjoyment.
