The Rupin Pass Trek is one of the most spectacular and dramatic high-altitude treks in the Indian Himalayas, offering an unparalleled journey through dense forests, alpine meadows, glacial streams, and snow-covered mountain passes. This classic trail connects Uttarakhand’s lush Dhauladhar ranges with the stark, rugged valleys of Kinnaur in Himachal Pradesh, crossing the 4,650 meters (15,252 ft) Rupin Pass.
Popular for its natural diversity and challenging but rewarding terrain, the trek takes you along roaring waterfalls like Rupin waterfall, pristine rivers, and remote villages immersed in Himalayan culture. With a mix of moderate to difficult sections, this trek offers breathtaking views of notable peaks such as Bandarpunch, Black Peak, and the Kinner Kailash range.
The trek begins from Dhauladhar village (1,500 m) and passes through charming villages like Sewa, Jiskun, and Udaknal amidst verdant alpine landscapes.
The route features iconic highlights such as the majestic Rupin Waterfall, and challenging snowy or icy sections near the pass including the famous Rupin Gully.
The ascent to Rupin Pass offers panoramic views over both the lush Umbrella-shaped Dhauladhar Range and the sunlit Spiti valley beyond.
After crossing the pass, the trail descends to the Ronti Gad campsite and finally to the picturesque Sangla Valley in Himachal Pradesh.
Rated as moderate to difficult, the trail involves steep ascents, snow navigation, rocky terrain, and requires good physical fitness and acclimatization awareness. The Rupin Gully section is particularly technical and demanding, requiring caution and teamwork. This trek is best suited for those with prior trekking experiences or good fitness levels.
The best time for the Rupin Pass trek is late May to mid-June and September to October, when the trails are clear of heavy snow and the weather is stable. The trek is generally avoided during July-August due to the monsoon and early winter months due to heavy snowfall and closed passes.
